| [center] FORCE - 21 GAME DESCRIPTION [center] The year is 2015 and China is rapidly becoming one of the world's leading capitalist powers. The Chinese armed forces have recently amassed troops on the Kazakstan border after the United States and other forces explicitly warned them that the consequences would be war. Overnight, World War III has begun. Diplomatic efforts to solve the crisis of northern Asia have failed.
Force 21 is all about information being gathered, maintained and disseminated so the player, as commander, can have an operational picture of the entire battlefield. The game is about the future of warfare and how battle units have been reduced in number and increased in abilities. Smaller, more tactically trained groups will result in fewer casualties while the same objective is accomplished. Force 21 focuses on the potential conflicts between the United States and China.
At the beginning of the game, you choose sides: USA or China. Naturally, each country has different objectives and missions as well as weapons and equipment. Options include a single- or multi-player game. In single-player, you play a new campaign and choose which platoon you control before the game starts. The mission setup phase portion of the manual shows each commander along with his special attributes. Each platoon has different vehicles and weapons, so commander strength and attributes aren't the only reason to select a specific platoon.
The intelligence phase presents the details of the mission via a 3D strategic map, followed by the action phase where the real game begins. You control your tanks and platoon through a 3D-battlefield display in pursuit of your objective and attack any enemy tanks. The 3D display can be toggled between either tactical or strategic mode. Tactical is a close up view of the vehicle in command as well as a view of the surrounding area while strategic mode is a zoomed out representation of the battlefield with individual platoons shown as letters.
The multi-player game is very similar to single-player but with a few key differences. If all your units have been destroyed, the game does not necessarily end as you can still toggle between surviving units of your allies. Also, if a player disconnects, any remaining forces associated with that player will be destroyed. The last feature is the multi-player chat that is available for "team only" as well as an open-chat that is sent to all players in the game.
Force 21 utilizes 35 different vehicles for ground forces and seven different aircraft. Included are such units as a M1A3 Abrams main battle tank and the A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft. As stated before, each platoon and commander has a different combination of vehicles but only begins with ground forces. You can also choose between 40 commanders (this includes both countries), ranging from Feng Lingcang, a brilliant tactician, to Dean Rupp, single-minded and dedicated but, at times, inattentive.
The game is designed to offer a possible preview of the future of United States ground force combat. The ideas and concepts used are based on real scenarios, descriptions of which can be read in the game's manual, posed by retired USA General Frederick M. Franks, Jr. Pack up and move out, Private! World War III is here! Special Features
